The amount of trash accumulated on the shorelines of the canal was crazy! – Paul Virally ’17

I have Learned that we can have a big impact on our environment, positive or negative starting with what we decide to through into the garbage our into our environment. – Michael Fedele ’17

Once I got to the Lachine Canal, it was surprising to see how much garbage was scattered along the shoreline. – Alyssa Howard ’17

The Great Canadian Shoreline cleanup was a chance for me and 8 others to take care of the Lachine Canal’s waters and shores in the morning.

This trip was full of surprises but the thing that surprised me the most was the large quantity of litter, I expected much less. – Erika Kaperonis ’17

I was very surprised about how much garbage was being thrown on the ground especially when the trash can was just a few feet away.

I thought that people cared more about our Earth, and I hope that now, people can see how much we really pollute. – Eli Samuel ’17

I didn’t realize just how polluted our waters were and how much work needs to be done in order to resolve the crisis that is global warming. – Adam Vandenbussche ’17

It is shocking to realize how eight students were able to fill over four bags of garbage in less than two hours. – Abigail Shine ’17

Environmental Fashion: Will.i.am Is Going Green!

All you fashion forward men, it’s time to take out your wallets because you are going shopping!

Famous rapper and member of the Black Eyed Peas has teamed up with Coca-Cola and the H Brothers to create fashionable and luxurious men’s suits out of recycled water bottles, what a genius concept!

We are always encouraged to recycle in order to protect our environment but not everyone seems to be completely motivated. Perhaps it is because it isn’t done in a very creative and enjoyable way. This concept is not only creative, but it is also a unique way to help save our environment.

Will.i.am wanted to raise greater awareness about recycling and decided to promote recycling in a fun and stylish way. The H brothers and the rapper collaborated on some funky and fabulous designs for menswear using recycled plastic bottles. Each suit is made up of approximately 25 bottles. The line will also include trendy neckties, pocket squares as well as bowties!

Guys, check out this fabulous line!

As the manager of the H brothers mentioned, “It’s truly the best of both worlds when you can use recycled materials to help keep guys looking fresh”. – Jennifer Ben-Menashe ’14

Polar Bear International

Untitled

Fighting Shoreline Debris

On June 1st, I participated in a shoreline cleanup hosted by the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup organization, the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Centre and WWF Canada. The activity consisted of picking up everything from cigarette butts to plastic bottles by the Lachine Canal. We did this to prevent any garbage getting into the water and out into the ocean.

–Noah Wou ’16

Solisterra: A Remarkable Accomplishment!

2012_2013_Solisterra_Gr8_May_172This past weekend, 21 grade 8 enriched-math students participated in a community service trip to Solisterra in Kazabazua, Quebec. Students had hands-on experiential learning with renewable energy sources and sustainable construction while living in a straw bale house for two days, operated mainly by solar power. They completed two projects: the assembly and launching of an 80-foot windmill and the building of a straw-bale chicken coop. Four chickens were on site eagerly awaiting their new home!

Two students write about their experience at Solisterra:

Solisterra was by far the most educational and most amusing school trip I’ve ever been on. I would have never thought that working in the hot sun for eight hours straight could be so much fun. On this trip I learned a lot about sustainable energy, using power tools, construction and working efficiently. I thought it was very impressive that I was sleeping in the biggest straw bale house in the world and that it was fully run on Solar Energy. The highlight of my trip was the satisfaction of seeing the 80 foot windmill finally go up after all the hard work that we put into it. I would love to do this trip again in my future years at LCC! – Yianni Manousakis ’16

The Solisterra experience was a very enjoyable yet hard working experience. Building a house and a windmill at Solisterra was such a unique experience. Even though it was hot and hard work, I very much enjoyed seeing the finished results of the projects that we started. Not only was the work rewarding but the house we stayed at was awesome and very spacious, and the food was absolutely delicious. The owners, our teachers and others that helped out were all very supportive and helpful. Overall this was a fun and exciting experience.- Cole Ellicott’ 16
