Duke of Edinburgh Adventurous Journey: An Aussie’s POV

DukeofEdNominingueCamp Nominingue was the perfect place for this four-day journey filled with hiking, canoeing and an abundance of memories. The beginning of the trip saw a night filled with star gazing and chatting around the campfire. It was agreed that the next four days would be a lovely break from the city and its demanding lifestyle. After a cold night’s sleep, rising to discover the ground covered completely in frost, the layers of clothing began to pile on. Three canoes filled with eight students singing against each other with the winner remaining unclear. Making it to the beach, we had a short hike to the top of a hill, which had a picture quality view of the lake. We later discovered that the group’s weakness manifested itself in the form of Swedish Berries and therefore an impromptu game of “ninja” was always around the corner. Returning back to ‘base’ we proceeded to sit around the campfire, pass the football and really get to know those we were sharing this experience with.

We spent the night playing an enthusiastic game of “spot,” that was nothing less than ridiculously challenging and managed to engage everyone in the student versus teacher style. From there we celebrated Victor’s 15th birthday in a classic campfire style with brownies, marshmallows and hot chocolate around the fire. By now, we had all realized that without our knowledge of “what the present time was,” how irrelevant knowing it at all really was.

Sunday morning, not too long until we would all have to venture back to Montreal, it dawned on all of us how sad leaving this experience would really be. This aside, the next activity on our agenda was hiking, where we hiked to yet another picture-perfect place. This place was different to most with its vegetation being one of a kind.

On returning, we played a whole group football game before heading out on an orienteering course. The orienteering course was difficult, but was enjoyable to say the least. By having infinite time on a skill, we developed abilities that will hopefully develop further and assist us in the future. By this time the group had managed to form a tight bond.

It was sad to realize that the trip was coming to an end, even though by this point a shower seemed pretty attractive. We continued on with a rather unappealing odour; mixed with a brilliant attitude to finish off our last night with what seemed a late bush walk, star gaze and our intense game of spotlight. As Monday came we all packed our bags filled with dirty clothes, packed up our tents, said goodbye to our beloved fire pit and cleaned up our site. We finished with a few team activities that tested our ability to communicate verbally and physically, with a race to the ultimate finish line.

International Round Square Conference – England – 2011

I’ve been to numerous conferences in my lifetime.  Although the conferences have been useful, in most cases I can’t really say they were exciting. Perhaps a speaker was particularly dynamic or perhaps I was exposed to a new idea. Round Square conferences, however, are very exciting. It is definitely a thrill to see the smiles on the young delegates faces and at times it is impossible not to be completely swept away by their enthusiasm and positive energy. A very common comment from the young delegates at the end of these conferences is “that was the best time of my life.”  Now I know that young people can be impulsive and impressionable, but nonetheless it feels very good to hear such a positive comment after an activity, which is intended to enrich the educational experience. I guess we could say that youth conferences like the ones of Round Square accomplish great things.

As educators we hope that the young Round Square delegates will learn more about issues related to the Round Square “IDEALS” – Internationalism, Democracy, Environment, Adventure, Leadership and Service. For sure the conferences address all of these “IDEALS.” However, for the students the excitement of meeting so many young people from around the world is probably the biggest thrill. They listen intently to the speakers, they attend the “barazza” groups (student-led discussion groups), they participate enthusiastically in all of the activities and they do not cause any difficulties to the adult supervisors. But when they attend the plenary sessions that are more oriented to social interaction and entertainment, the enthusiasm simply explodes. To be in the middle of eight hundred 15-16 year olds who are all waving flags from countries around the world, swaying back and forth in unison to the hit song “Wavin’ Flag” by K’naan – well – truly exciting. In fact for many of us adults, it brought tears to our eyes. Too bad all of you could not experience this. The students will remember this positive experience for the rest of their lives and I will too!– John Gordon, School Counsellor

Échange St-Vincent, France: Tour Eiffel, Champs Élysées, Venise..

Ce n’est pas possible! Il me reste que 3 semaines! Je suis allée à Montmartre et au Sacré Cœur avec les correspondants australiens et argentins. J’ai vraiment aimé Montmartre parce qu’il y avait beaucoup de petits magasins et notre professeur nous a donné du temps libre pour faire un peu de magasinage. J’ai finalement acheté un chandail de l’Université de Paris. On a aussi visité le Moulin Rouge. Le lendemain, nous sommes retournés à Paris. Le matin, nous avons visité le Musée D’Orsay pour voir les célèbres peintures de Vincent Van Gogh. Après, on a pris le métro pour aller aux Champs-Élysées où on a fait du magasinage pour le reste de la journée. Vendredi soir, nous sommes allés à une soirée où j’ai eu l’opportunité de parler à d’autres étudiants du lycée. Dimanche matin, la famille de Gwen m’a amenée à une course de voiture. J’ai pu faire deux tours de circuit dans une Porsche GT3, qui est la plus rapide sur le marché. C’était vraiment quelque chose d’épatant et un souvenir que je chérirai toujours. Lundi matin, j’ai fait mon dernier voyage à Paris organisé par le lycée. Maintenant, c’était juste avec les correspondants argentins parce que les Australiens sont partis. Nous avons visité les environs de Paris sur le Batobus et aussi grimpé au sommet de la Tour Eiffel.

La semaine suivante, je suis allée à Venise en voyage de classe pendant 4 jours. Le premier jour, nous étions extrêmement fatigués, mais prêts à découvrir Venise. Notre premier arrêt a été pour le déjeuner. Les enseignants nous ont donné 45 minutes pour trouver un endroit pour manger. Après, nous nous sommes retrouvés à la Piazza San Marco, afin de commencer notre visite guidée autour des principales attractions de Venise. Le deuxième jour, nous avons visité de nombreux musées, dont La Biennale di Venezia qui a été une Exposition internationale d’Art. Le troisième jour, nous avons visité de nombreuses cathédrales et le célèbre opéra, La Fenice. Les professeurs nous ont donné du temps libre pour se promener autour de la Piazza San Marco et nous avons marché autour de la Piazzale Roma où il y avait beaucoup de magasins et de cafés. Après cela, toute la classe s’est retrouvée et nous sommes allés voir une symphonie de musique romantique française. Le quatrième jour, la France était en finale contre la Nouvelle-Zélande au Rugby, la plupart de la classe est allée regarder le match. Avec le reste de la classe, nous avons visité le ghetto juif. Dans le celui-ci, nous avons visité trois synagogues. L’une était la synagogue vénitienne, l’autre était la synagogue française et la dernière était la synagogue allemande.—Brooke Stein ’13

Le séjour à Jouvence se déroule à merveille. Nous avons recueilli quelques impressions pour vous.

Des animatrices courageuses
Les animatrices s’appellent Splenda, Picasso, Carpet et Shakti. Elles sont vraiment gentilles, courageuses et amusantes. Splenda est tout à fait unique, Picasso est artistique, Carpet est toujours joyeuse et Shakti raconte de très bonnes histoires. Merci à toutes les animatrices !

Un grand choix d’activités
J’ai aimé l’hébertisme parce que les obstacles dans la forêt étaient vraiment amusants. On a fait un grand jeu le soir et tout le monde a aimé ça. Il y a aussi du tir à l’arc, de l’escalade et plein d’autres activités. Les activités à Jouvence sont vraiment intéressantes.

La nourriture est très bonne. Nous avons mangé de délicieuses saucisses au diner hier. Ce matin des crêpes étaient servies pour le déjeuner. Un des élèves a mangé dix crêpes! Tout le monde trouve que la nourriture est magnifique !

Duke of Ed Bronze Trip: New Friends, New Skills and Teamwork

This year, the grade 9 class had the opportunity to participate in an incredible experience trip that introduced us to the Duke of Edinburgh program (view photo gallery). Not only did we learn useful outdoor skills, the trip also afforded us the opportunity to bond with the 20 new students we welcomed to the class of 2014 at the start of this year.

The moment I heard that this year’s trip was taking place in Notre-Dâme de la Rouge, I knew it would be amazing. This town has already had a great impact on my life: my late uncle was the mayor of Grenville Sur la Rouge for many years.

Canoeing, tenting, hiking and skill management are all examples of the many activities included in this excursion. Grouped into pairs of houses, we had the chance to interact with new classmates and some “old ones” whom we did not know so well. Each activity consisted of a new skill, more concentration and teamwork. The canoeing activity clearly brought out the best of each advisory’s team spirit and leadership. The risk management brought out the best of our fear and concentration, and paid off with a new accomplishment. The hiking led to intense conversation and new friendships. Culminating by some astonishing waterfalls, the hike was one of the best activities of all. Last but not least, the team challenges activity helped us build new aptitudes and further developed collaboration between advisees as well as our interpersonal team skills.

Some of us were given the opportunity to sleep in tents on a separate island close by. This involved canoeing with our necessities, assembling and disassembling our tents and enjoying hotdogs and marshmallows by the bonfire.

Overall, this year’s experience trip was unforgettable. Thank you LCC for giving us the chance to dive headfirst into a new school year. —Victoria Van Ryswyk ’14
