Mackay Centre Students Inspire

At the beginning of the year, Klara, Zoe, Alessandro, Vikki, Franky, Logan, Lyndsay and I went to Camp Massawippi for three days with Ms. Leiter to work with students from the Mackay Centre. We spent our time taking walks, watching movies and doing arts and crafts with them. We had an amazing time and formed bonds that will never be broken. By the time we came back to school, we already missed the kids so much that we decided to plan one last visit.

Last Wednesday, we finally went back to the Mackay Centre. We painted flowers with the students and made cards for Mother’s Day. We had a lot of fun with the kids and it was really great to see them again.

The Mackay students were so inspiring. They taught me to try and make the best of every situation. All of them had disabilities, yet they were some of the happiest children I’ve ever met. This whole experience has been amazing and I will never forget it. – Olivia Black ’13

La jolie France – Semaine 6: Nice, Èze Village, Menton, et Monaco !

Pour ma dernière semaine en France, Marie et sa mère m’ont amenée à Nice, comme c’était les vacances de Pâques. On est arrivées à l’aéroport de Nice très tard, vendredi soir. Nous sommes restées à Èze pendant cinq jours. Pendant notre première journée de vacances, la sœur d’Emmanuelle et son fils sont venus à l’appartement pour que nous puissions visiter tous ensemble la petite ville de Menton, qui est juste à côté de la frontière d’Italie. On a marché autour des petits magasins pendant quelques heures, et à la fin de notre journée, on est allé manger des crêpes devant l’océan.

On a célébré les fêtes de Pâques le dimanche avec sa tante, et on a mangé de l’agneau et beaucoup de chocolat. Après le repas, on est allé à Monaco. À Monaco, on a pris un petit train pour visiter plusieurs lieux intéressants comme Le Port de Monaco, le Circuit F1, le Casino de Monte-Carlo, L’Hôtel de Paris, le Palais Princier, et le Musée Océanographique. Après notre magnifique tour à Monaco, nous avons marché jusqu’au Palais Princier pour voir la relève de la garde. Monaco est une principauté, avec beaucoup d’élégance.

Pendant la troisième journée de vacances, nous sommes restées à Èze pour visiter le village, et l’usine de la parfumerie Fragonard. On a appris comment se fabrique les parfums, les savons, et les cosmétiques de cette marque qui n’est pas commercialisée ailleurs. Après notre visite et notre magasinage dans leur boutique, on est allé voir le jardin exotique qui se trouve tout en haut d’Èze Village. La vue était extraordinaire.

Les deux dernières journées des vacances étaient très relaxantes et je suis très contente que j’aie l’opportunité d’y aller avec eux à la côte d’Azur. On a retourné chez eux à la fin de mon séjour. Cette expérience en France était géniale et inoubliable. J’ai profité de tout en France et j’ai appris beaucoup des choses qui vont me suivre pendant des années. La jolie France – Semaine 3: Notre amitié pour la vie

Après deux semaines, je suis vraiment à l’aise dans la famille de Marie. Je suis aussi vraiment habituée à la vie française. Tous les amis de Marie sont très gentils, et presque tout le monde au Lycée m’aide à trouver des classes sans hésitation. Marie, et quelques-uns de ses amis me prennent pour déjeuner à Senlis trois fois par semaine. C’est dans cette ville-là que se situe le Lycée St Vincent. Il y a deux restaurants qu’ils aiment beaucoup. Un de ces restaurants s’appelle Kebab, ou tu peux manger des sandwichs à la viande, et une petite crêperie que j’ai bien aimée. Avec la famille de Marie, j’ai découvert la nourriture traditionnelle de la France. Ils m’ont fait gouter des fromages, une variété des pains, et, bien sûr, beaucoup des desserts.

Cette semaine, avec le lycée, je suis allée au Château de Versailles avec les correspondants espagnols. Ils étaient très sociables et gentils. On a visité toutes les pièces magnifiques du château et le jardin. Le château était magnifique, toutes les pièces étaient construites avec différentes couleurs des marbres qui brillent au soleil qui passe par les fenêtres. Le jardin entoure le château, et ça lui donne du caractère. Quand j’ai marché dans le jardin, j’ai observé tous les arbres qui sont parfaitement coupés et les fleurs qui poussent. Il y avait plusieurs de canaux dans le jardin où il y avait des canards qui nagent calmement. Il y avait des petits restaurants entre les arbres. J’ai acheté une crème glacée et j’ai marché dans le jardin pour admirer sa beauté.

À la fin de la semaine, Marie et son père m’ont amenée à Paris pour voir tous les monuments importants, et pour prendre des photos. On a passé toute la journée dehors. On a marché pendant cinq heures, en posant devant tous les monuments. Le Pont des Arts était la dernière chose qu’on a visité. C’était la chose la plus importante de tout ce qu’on a vu pendant la journée. On a acheté un cadenas et on a écrit Marie+Ilana et on l’a mis sur le pont pour notre amitié pour la vie. Notre journée à Paris était très amusante, on était des mannequins pour la journée! – Ilana Singer ’16

Student Exchange Australia: Accents, Animals and Aussies

I arrived Down Under on March 1, and have lived and tanned with a group of extraordinary people I will never forget! The day after I arrived, I went to the beach, and I saw my first typically Australian scene: bright blue skies, turquoise waters and golden-white sand that your feet sank into.

On Monday, I went to school, and it is going really well. My classes and teachers at Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School are great, and I’ve been able to take part in the school band, which has been really fun.

If I had to compare BCGS to LCC, the first thought to come to mind would be the campus: BCGS is really spread out, and walking from one end to the other takes more than ten minutes…

I am staying in boarding, and really enjoying that as well: I have been able to connect with a whole group of students outside of my grade that I would never have met otherwise.

Although my entire time here so far has been memorable, my favourite part so far has been my visit to the local wildlife park, where I was able to pet and feed a group of kangaroos. I had no idea that they actually hopped, nor did I realize quite how small they are… kangaroos still have to be some of the coolest animals around either way.

Although I miss my family, I am looking forward to my next few weeks here, and I really hope that they don’t pass by as quickly as my first few! – Michael Hamilton ’16

Australia Exchange: Thank You For An Amazing Experience!

Three days left and still I am wondering where the time has gone? This entire exchange feels as if it has flown by in a matter of minutes. I have made so many good friends here and will definitely miss them, as well as the school. I would like to thank Ballarat Grammar for making this exchange possible, and I would especially like to thank Matt, his brother Dan, Mother Amanda and Father Alan for being such amazing, friendly and welcoming hosts. I don’t think I could have possibly had a better host family! They have showed me so much throughout my time here and I am so grateful for all they have done.

The last two weeks have been nothing but busy (in a good way.) Last week, I was invited to speak with up and coming francophones in the grade 7 French class. I spoke to them about the importance of learning French, as well as life in Montreal. Although they did not understand much of what I said, they all seemed to enjoy the presentation quite well, giving me positive feedback, followed by smiles and “Bonjour Ryan!” as we crossed paths around the school.

On the weekend, we decided to drive into Melbourne, which is about an hour and a half away from Ballarat. While in Melbourne, we were lucky enough to experience the Australian Grand Prix atop the Eureka Skydeck, which is essentially the Sears Tower of the Southern hemisphere. This was a very amazing experience, as I had never even watched The Canadian Grand Prix, which is located in our own backyard!

Later that day, we visited an old, decommissioned prison where Ned Kelly, Victorian vigilante was hung. We took a tour of the prison, which included a bunch of historical information and cells open for public exploration.

After lunch, we made our way over to the ETIHAD stadium to watch Carlton play Port Adelaide. Being the first time watching Australian Rules football, I was quite confused at first, but eventually understood the concept, as it is much simpler then American Football. I had a great time at the game and we had a lot of fun.

Last weekend, we went to Matt’s vacation home in a beautiful region called Halls Gap. Halls Gap is located within a valley surrounded by Rocky Mountains. The area is full of wildlife. Kangaroos were such a common site in Halls Gap, they were essentially like squirrels! We saw them everywhere in huge packs of 30! Right next to Matt’s house is a large clearing where we saw hundreds of kangaroos sprinting past the window each day, a couple of rabbits, kookaburras, cockatoos, a family of deer, emus and even an echidna! While there, we went driving in the mountains and rock climbing! – Ryan Hawa ’16
