Making Links Through Hockey

FieldHockey_09Oct2009Today’s activity was a real experience for me. Ms. Wearing told us we had a surprise assignment. After recess she told us we were playing field hockey. We have been reading a book that takes place in Afghanistan and in the book they talk about field hockey. She showed us a video on it and then we had to go outside and we had a chance to play.

It was very different from normal hockey and you have to play right-handed. The balls are as hard as rock and they bounce a lot. First, we tried passing the ball around with a partner then we got to try to see who could get their ball the farthest.  I was really excited to shoot the ball as hard as I could but it didn’t go that far. The reason why we did this was to get a feel for what Afghans do during physical education class. That day I learned that even Afghan people play hockey. Most of all, I was really shocked on how different the sticks were. They were gold coloured with a hook at the bottom that had a flat side and a round side, but you are only allowed to use the flat side. It’s nice to see that people can do things in different ways and still have lots of fun.

  1. Dear Kameel,
First of all I wanted to compliment you on your writing skills. What you wrote was interesting and anyone who reads this will get a good idea of what you were describing. It made me realize that most kids enjoy playing sports, no matter where they’re from or how different their lifestyles may be. I really enjoyed your paragraph on Afghan field hockey! See you in class,
    Julia Garfinkle

  2. I’m also in 5th grade and, like Kameel, had a grat time. It was one of the best experiences in my ten-year-old life!

  3. I really like what you wrote, Kameel because I didn’t know that field hockey is played in Afghanistan. The things that you see in the newspaper or on television about Afghanistan are only about war. I tried to play field hockey and it’s not easy because you have to play right-handed and I am left-handed in hockey.

  4. I also agee with Kameel it was very fun. I Also think it was different than ice hockey because you have adifferent stick and ball. It felt weired at first then I got the hang of it because in ice hockey you have way better control also because I have been playing ice hockey for years. Another reason why it is different is because in field hockey you can’t use both ways of the stick and on ice you could.

Field hockey is a fun sport

  5. I am in Kameel’s grade (grade 5), and I really enjoyed the lesson even though I couldnt hit the ball very far!

  6. I also agree with Kameel because although I don’t really like hockey, I found it fun. The stick and the ball were really heavy. It was a lot of fun passing the ball to my friends it did’nt go really far. 😀

  7. I never knew their was such a difference between ice hockey and field hockey. For me the experience of actually playing field hockey with my class was a lot of fun and helped me understand the game.

  8. I thought that learning how to play field hockey was a great experience because everyone in our class thought it would be just as easy as playing ice hockey. It was much harder than everyone had expected. It was similar to golf. For the people that are left handed in hockey it is hard because
you have to be right handed to play with field hockey sticks.

  9. Field Hockey is much different from ice hockey. I thought it was going to be easy but it was one of the hardest sports I have ever played. I had a great time even though I had to shoot right (while I shoot left-handed in ice hockey) and only use one side of the stick. The sticks were much heavier than I thought they would be. It’s fun playing new sports!

  10. Similar to your classmates, I enjoyed reading your paragragh on hockey in Afghanistan. My experience with trying out the different hockey stick and hard ball was challenging. I realize I would need lots of practice to be able to score a goal because I am not able to play right-handed hockey.

  11. What you wrote is true. Field hockey was very hard and fun. It was hard because you have to use only the flat side and play right-handed. It was very fun especially when you try to juggle the ball and when we had the contest of who could shoot the farthest.
