Le 13 Novembre, 2013, j’ai eu la chance de participer à un webinar avec plusieurs écoles du monde et Polar Bear International, un organisme qui fait des recherches sur les aspects variés de la vie de l’ours polaire dans le parc national de Wapuskau au Manitoba. Au cours de la conférence, qui était dirigée par un Webcast live, cinq scientifiques discutaient avec nous des problèmes controversés et répondaient aux questions que les écoles participantes ont posées. Savais-tu que, à cause des déchets qui arrivent dans le grand nord, tous les ours polaires ont environ deux cent formes de contamination dans leur corps?

Fighting Shoreline Debris

On June 1st, I participated in a shoreline cleanup hosted by the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup organization, the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Centre and WWF Canada. The activity consisted of picking up everything from cigarette butts to plastic bottles by the Lachine Canal. We did this to prevent any garbage getting into the water and out into the ocean.

Toutes les années, plusieurs animaux meurent en s’étouffant avec des déchets jetés par les humains. Pendant deux heures, nous les avons ramassés sur les deux cotés du canal Lachine, proche du marché Atwater. A la fin de l’activité, on avait deux sacs de vidange pleins. Solisterra: A Remarkable Accomplishment!

This past weekend, 21 grade 8 enriched-math students participated in a community service trip to Solisterra in Kazabazua, Quebec. Students had hands-on experiential learning with renewable energy sources and sustainable construction while living in a straw bale house for two days, operated mainly by solar power. They completed two projects: the assembly and launching of an 80-foot windmill and the building of a straw-bale chicken coop. Four chickens were on site eagerly awaiting their new home!

Two students write about their experience at Solisterra:

Solisterra was by far the most educational and most amusing school trip I’ve ever been on. I would have never thought that working in the hot sun for eight hours straight could be so much fun. On this trip I learned a lot about sustainable energy, using power tools, construction and working efficiently. I thought it was very impressive that I was sleeping in the biggest straw bale house in the world and that it was fully run on Solar Energy. The highlight of my trip was the satisfaction of seeing the 80 foot windmill finally go up after all the hard work that we put into it. I would love to do this trip again in my future years at LCC! – Yianni Manousakis ’16

The Solisterra experience was a very enjoyable yet hard working experience. Building a house and a windmill at Solisterra was such a unique experience. Even though it was hot and hard work, I very much enjoyed seeing the finished results of the projects that we started. Not only was the work rewarding but the house we stayed at was awesome and very spacious, and the food was absolutely delicious. The owners, our teachers and others that helped out were all very supportive and helpful. Overall this was a fun and exciting experience.- Cole Ellicott’ 16

Corvée du Mont-Royal 2013

Aujourd’hui nous avons planté des arbres. Quand je me suis réveillé à 7 heures, je croyais creuser des trous et planter des arbres. Nous avons fait tout ceci, mais le plus dur a été les roches. Il avait tellement de roches lorsqu’on cresait qu’il fallait utiliser une pioche. Nous sommes revenus à 12h15 de notre expédition. Une très belle façon de passer une mâtinée. — Benjamin Boucher-Charest ’16

C’était une experience excellente et j’étais très content de planter les trois arbres avec mon équipe. La seule chose que je regrette est le sol rocheux et les discours qui étaient trop longs. — Andrew Zhang ’17

Le service communautaire de dimanche a été très agréable. Je trouvais que c’était très amusant, j’ai aussi trouvé que c’était très enrichissant et ça m’a redu très heureuse après. Je suis très satisfaite que j’aie eu l’opportunité de faire ce bénévolat. — Jessica Brender ’16

Jessica, Ben, Andres, Andrew, Monsieur Maurice et moi sont allés planter des arbres proche du chalet du Mont-Royal. C’était un expérience très amusante et intéressante car je ne suis jamais allé sur la montagne pour aller planter des arbres comme service communautaire. Le blog du MS Pride: Candy Grams Support Madagascar in My Heart

As the Activities Heads for Middle School Pride this year, Alyssa Obrand ’16 and Julia Garfinkle ’16 have been quite successful with the activities held so far. In total, $275 was raised after the Halloween candy raffle, the knockout tournament, the Halloween costume contest and the Halloween episode of “Modern Family” that was shown at lunch recess.

In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, an activity called “Candy Grams” is being held this week. Candy grams are notes that are bought by Middle School students for the purpose of writing a message to another student of their choice in grades 7 and 8. The notes can be anonymous (or not). They cost $1 each and attached to the note is a piece of chocolate! All money raised will be sent to the foundation Madagascar in My Heart, along with the money collected from previous activities, to bring educational opportunities to underprivileged children of Madagascar and help brighten their future.

À ce jour, notre expérience de leadership a été magnifique. C’est un excellent apprentissage. Nous sommes très fières des efforts investis pour faire les activités et de l’argent collecté pour cette fondation. Nous croyons que nous faisons un bon travail tout en maintenant l’intérêt des étudiants et en créant des activités amusantes et originales. C’est un privilège d’avoir la chance d’améliorer les expériences des étudiants du Middle School.

Nous espérons planifier les activités suivantes: vente de biscuits, plusieurs activités dans le gymnase, projection de nombreux films et plein d’autres encore!
